Pre-Treatment: The Foundation of Coating Quality

Pre-treatment: The Foundation of Coating Quality

Electroplating is a precision electrochemical reaction occurring at the interface between the substrate and the electrolyte. Pre-treatment—the collective term for all processing and cleaning stages before immersion—is the decisive factor in ensuring coating adhesion, uniformity, and corrosion resistance.

Based on the surface conditions of various substrates (such as steel, copper alloys, and aluminum alloys), pre-treatment is categorized into four core process modules, each supported by specific chemical raw materials:

Pre-Treatment: The Foundation of Coating Quality

1. Degreasing

This stage is designed to thoroughly eliminate animal or vegetable oils and mineral oils. Beyond basic alkaline saponifiers, surfactants are essential for emulsifying and dispersing modern complex drawing oils and coolants.

Base Alkalies: Sodium Hydroxide, Sodium Carbonate, Trisodium Phosphate.

Detergency & Dispersion: Sodium Metasilicate Pentahydrate, Sodium Gluconate.

High-Efficiency Emulsification: Surfactants (e.g., OP-10, Polyethers, AEO Series) and specialized additives.

2. Pickling & Etching

Used to remove oxide scales, rust, and surface transformation layers caused by mechanical processing, revealing an active substrate surface.

General Rust Removal: Hydrochloric Acid, Sulfuric Acid.

Specialized Substrates: Nitric Acid (for stainless steel/aluminum brightening), Hydrofluoric Acid (for cast iron/Al-Si alloys), Sulfamic Acid.

Substrate Protection: Corrosion Inhibitors, Acid Mist Suppressants.

3. Activation & Desmutting

As the final step before entering the plating tank, a mild acidic solution is used to remove microscopic oxide films, ensuring a molecular-level bond between the coating and the substrate.

Core Materials: Fluoroboric Acid, Citric Acid, Dilute Sulfuric Acid.

Non-Ferrous Specialization: Zinc Oxide, Potassium Sodium Tartrate (for aluminum alloy zincating).
